Introduction

Harish Salve is known for his advocacy prowess in India. He was born on 22nd June 1955 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He has carved a niche for himself in the legal arena, both in India and on the international stage. In 2015, he was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian awards in India, in recognition of his exceptional service to the nation. He is considered as one of the most expensive advocates in India.

  • Harish Salve is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
  • He assisted Nani Palkhivala in the Minerva Mills Pvt. Ltd. v. Union of India (1980).
  • He is a Senior Advocate enrolled in 1992 under Bar Council of India.
  • He was appointed as the Solicitor General of India from 1st November 1999 to 3rd November 2002.
  • Harish is enrolled in the Bar in England & Wales and was appointed a King’s Counsel in 2020.

  • State of Maharashtra v. Salman Salim Khan & Anr (2003):
    • Harish Salve represented the accused in the hit and run case where the Supreme Court of India acquitted him due to dearth and contradiction of evidence.
  • Reliance Natural Resources v. Reliance Industries (2010):
    • Harish Salve represented Reliance Natural Resources in a dispute with Reliance Industries over the supply and pricing of natural gas from the Krishna Godavari Basin.
    • The SC delivered a judgment in favor of Reliance Industries.
  • Vodafone International Holdings B.V. v. Union of India & Anr (2012):
    • Harish Salve represented Vodafone in a landmark tax case against the Indian government.
    • The case involved a dispute over capital gains tax arising from Vodafone's acquisition of Hutchison Essar.
    • The SC ruled in favor of Vodafone, stating that the transaction was not subject to taxation in India.
  • India v. Pakistan (2017):
    • Harish Salve represented India at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case involving Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian national sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage.
    • In 2019, the ICJ ruled in favor of India, stating that Pakistan should review and reconsider the conviction and sentence of Jadhav and provide consular access to him.
  • Tata Consultancy Services Ltd v. Cyrus Investment Pvt. Ltd. (2020):
    • Harish Salve represented Tata Sons in the legal battle against Cyrus Mistry, who was removed as the chairman of Tata Sons.
    • The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) dismissed Mistry's petition, upholding his removal.
  • Future Coupons Private Limited & Ors v. Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings LLC (2022):
    • It was a case of the merger of Amazon and Future Retail v. Future Retail and Reliance.
    • Senior Advocate Harish Salve, representing Future Retail, was advocating for the continuation of NCLT proceedings concerning the Future-Reliance deal.
    • However, the SC upheld the merger of Amazon and Future Retail.
